Listen up!

Oracy October is back and this year’s theme is all about ‘listening’. Throughout the month we’ll be reflecting on the role listening plays in oracy, and how you can support your students to become great listeners. 

We have lots of great content that you can access throughout October highlighting the key role listening plays in school and beyond, including:

  • Stories from students and their experiences of what it feels like to be truly listened to

Inclusive listening: how to ensure every voice is heard

It takes the whole class to make a classroom inclusive. This session will explore the ways in which oracy practices enable you to teach and foster inclusive listening practices. Hear from experienced teachers and practitioners who’ve shifted the balance from making your voice heard to ensuring everyone’s voice is heard.

Cultivating a culture of listening: a whole school approach

Listening to our students and amplifying their voices doesn’t stop at the classroom door. In this session we will explore examples of best practice in fostering student agency and providing platforms from which students’ voices can be truly heard and valued as part of a whole school culture of oracy.

It is also a route to social mobility, empowering all students, not just some, to find their voice to succeed in school and life.

What is Oracy October?

An annual celebration of oracy

Oracy October is Voice 21’s annual celebration of oracy. It’s a month of free events and resources designed to raise awareness of the important role oracy plays in supporting students to transform their learning and lives through talk.

Shining a spotlight on the power of listening

Each year there is a new Oracy October theme that helps refine different skills related to oracy. The theme for 2024 is ‘listening’ and we’ll be shining a spotlight on the power of listening throughout the month.

Is Oracy October free?

Oracy October sessions that are held online are 100% free and accessible to anyone who is interested in learning more about high quality oracy practice.

All our resource packs are also free to download for anyone who wants to use them with their students.

The Great Oracy Exhibition, which takes place during Oracy October, is an in-person and ticketed event. You can purchase tickets for the Great Oracy Exhibition here. Registration closes on 9th October 2024.
